The Publicist position provides a critical role in promoting and managing the reputation of the Museum in the press and the public domain. This individual develops and executes media relations strategies that reinforce and enhance the reputation of the museum with local, regional, national, and international audiences including proactively facilitating a robust calendar of press releases, and identifying and pitching meaningful stories to the press and alternative media sources (i.e., bloggers) to increase the museum’s thought leadership position. This individual also responds to press inquiries, coordinates media events, acts as a spokesperson to the Museum, and facilitates organizational response to the press in the event of a crisis. This individual is focused on monitoring both the internal and external environment for issues of importance to the museum that have the potential to positively/negatively impact public and media perceptions. This person cultivates deep relationships with a broad cross-section of media contacts including journalists, bloggers, and other influencers. This person also serves as a daily point of contact with our media relations agency and other relevant third parties.


Drive exposure and positive perceptions of the Museum of Science through the production and/or approval of 15+ press releases and 15+ media alerts on an annual basis distributed to targeted media outlets.
Cultivate and grow relationships with a broad cross-section of 1000+ media contacts and respond to press inquiries daily – approximately 5 to 10 per week.
Develop and maintain 5 – 10 media lists annually to ensure accurate and up-to-date contacts for various targeted media and influencers.
Publicize 20+ events, and programs on an annual basis through traditional (online and offline) media and social media.
Plan and execute 3 to 5 events per year, including press events, to help deepen relationships with media and support the Museum’s overall objectives
Arrange ~ 40+ opportunities on an annual basis to increase the Museum’s visibility through interviews, filming requests, and other related activities


Manager of Public Relations


Bachelors of Science or Arts degree
2 or more years of media relations, communications, or journalism experience
Experience with professional writing and proofreading
Background in communications, public relations and/or marketing
Diplomatic interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal effectively with differing opinions and diverse personalities
Demonstrated understanding of the media environment


Exempt (Salaried). Commensurate with experience.
