IPN Event – Behind the Scenes: How the Media and PR Professionals Prepare for the Boston Marathon

IPN Event - Behind the Scenes: How the Media and PR Professionals Prepare for the Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is one of the most important dates in Massachusetts as more than 500,000 spectators come to cheer on the runners over the 26.2 mile course. Behind the scenes though, planning for the Marathon can begin as early as January for WBZ-TV and corporate sponsors of the race. Did you know WBZ-TV pulls together the story ideas for this event more than four months out? Do you know what role John Hancock, a lead sponsor, plays in introducing the elite athletes to the local media? As this is one of the most important events for the Boston Athletic Association, how does their PR team prepare for this one day event? Lastly, shoe companies, athletic apparel businesses, and running legends want to ensure they generate some exposure before and after Marathon Monday to promote their brands.

On Wednesday, February 28 from 12 p.m.-2 p.m., PRSA Boston’s IPN Network is hosting a “Lunch and Learn” with Peter R. Brown, Principal of Peter Brown Communications, and Joshua Milne, owner of Joshua Milne PR.

Peter spent more than twenty-five years in television journalism. He was WBZ-TV’s news director from 1993-2004 and he is a member of the Board of Governors of the B.A.A., supporting the Boston Marathon and its various community activities.

Joshua Milne worked at John Hancock as a sports marketing PR specialist and worked to promote John Hancock’s involvement with the Boston Marathon. As a solo practitioner, he has worked with clients such as Runner’s World, Saucony, 261 Fearless, Kathrine Switzer, etc., to promote clients in the weeks leading up to the big race.
