The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

We are seeking a Regional Communications Specialist to support our Massachusetts Region. Can be based in the Medford, Dedham or Worcester office.

We are looking for a copy writing, content-creating superstar who wants to help tell stories. Must enjoy pushing up your sleeves to execute communications projects. The Regional Communications Specialist will work in a fast-paced environment to help tell the many stories of the American Red Cross and the work of our 90% volunteer workforce.

Job Summary:

The Regional Communications Specialist is responsible for carrying out communication activities in the region as defined by the Regional Communication Director.  The Specialist supports the strategic communication direction in the region in order to promote the full mission of the Red Cross in local communities.  The Specialist leads and manages a volunteer team and is responsible for raising the visibility of local chapters to promote Red Cross fundraising and service delivery efforts across all lines of Red Cross business.


Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field or combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

Experience:  3-5 years of experience managing a social media program in a professional environment.  Demonstrated proficiency using social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Flickr, Instagram, Pinterest in a professional environment.  Demonstrates strong project management skills.  Experience leading a team of people is essential. Experience working in or with a Red Cross chapter is highly preferred. Fluency in Spanish or other languages is a plus.

Management Experience:  6 months – 1 year supervisory experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities:  The candidate should also be creative, a strong team player and possess the ability to work in fast paced, quickly changing environment.  Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully and professional interact with the public through social media are essential. Must be able to multitask, meet deadlines and work collaboratively with individuals at all levels of the Region and National Headquarters.  Should also be creative, a strong team player and possess the ability to work in fast paced, quickly changing environment. Excellent media skills, the ability to identify a newsworthy story and the ability to write effectively and quickly are also highly valued in this position.  Proficiency with various social media platforms and the ability to produce content for those sites is a must.  Experience with Constant Contact, Hootsuite, Social Studio, Trendkite preferred. Must be a self-starter, with the ability to work independently with limited supervision, as a team member and work well under pressure.

Should have a love for online content creation. Video and photo experience a plus.

Other:  Intermediate level proficiency with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  In regions with only two communication staff, the Specialist supports the Director in ensuring the region carries out a set of specific set of communication functions.

Travel:  Will involve regional travel; a valid driver’s license required.
